The Dongguan government’s plan to establish a civic and commercial axis in the city by 2030 calls for renovation of the Huangqi Mountain Sports Park, an important site with proximity to the axis. The sports facilities of the new park are organized in response to the site’s topographic changes – there is an existing 8m concrete wall that prevents accessibility from the main street. The new park continues to accommodate a range of indoor and outdoor sports activities, while offering new recreational programs, including library, theater, retail, and food and beverage. A water landscape park further enriches the site as a public leisure space. The old and new programs on-site form different themed zones, connected by strategically planned boulevards and circulation routes that bring in new users. In particular, new entrances are added at the side of the football field, which was originally blocked by a retaining wall. The site is now cohesive and lively due to newfound accessibility, allowing for the renovated sports and cultural park to support future developments around the civic and commercial axis.
